Oral Medicine
This specialist department provides diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases and pain in the lips, cheeks, tongue and jaw.
There are two branches to the Oral Medicine clinic. These are Facial Pain and Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), and Oral Medicine – Mucosal.
Facial Pain and TMD
Clinical criteria:
- Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD)
- Oral dysaesthesias, including burning mouth syndrome
- Suspected neuralgia
Prerequisite for referral:
- Ensure all possible organic / dental causes of pain have been investigated and treated.

Oral Medicine – Mucosal
Clinical criteria:
Those with oral mucosal disorders including
- white patches
- recurrent oral ulceration
- non-healing ulcers
- pigmented lesions
- Xerostomia
